In this project, our Kindergartners investigated the following questions:
The ABC’s of Us is grounded in Social Emotional Learning, Literacy, and Art. Social Emotional Learning Through read alouds, role playing and consistent practice, we learned about what it meant to be a “Kind Friend” in Kindergarten. We practiced compassion, self-control, and flexibility everyday. Early Literacy We began with an exploration of each other’s names. We paid attention to each letter and sound. To prepare for the publishing of our first book, our Kinders wrote daily about our “Student of the Day” and practiced letter sounds, sight word recognition, and writing in our Literacy Investigations (independent learning centers). Our Class Book We studied a variety of alphabet books and paid special attention to its unique text features. We created an alphabet word wall with words that described our community (awesome, compassionate, flexible, kind). We then combined all of those pieces into our alphabet book. Art and Visual Literacy Inspired by our “Still Life” work and other student created books, our Kinders decided on a mixed media approach. Their illustrations were created with crayon, pencil, marker, watercolor paint, and stickers. |
